Understanding Character Limits
When customising your albums with text, you might notice that the character limits vary depending on the album size, font choice, and personalisation method. Here’s why:
- Album Size Matters
The space available for personalisation directly relates to the album size. Larger albums provide more room, allowing longer text, while smaller albums have less space, meaning shorter character limits are needed to ensure the text remains clear and aesthetically pleasing. - Font Choice
Different fonts occupy space in different ways. Some fonts are wide, with each character taking up more room, while others are more compact. To maintain a balanced, elegant look, certain fonts will have stricter character limits compared to others. Choosing a more compact font often allows for longer messages. - Personalisation Method
Each method—foiling, debossing, engraving, or digital printing—has unique requirements that influence character limits. With digital methods, the point size of the text can vary depending on the album size, allowing us more flexibility to adjust the font size to suit the design. In contrast, debossing or foiling uses fixed point sizes regardless of the album size, which can limit the number of characters that fit comfortably.
Digital vs. Brass Type Personalisation Methods
We offer a range of personalisation methods, some of which are digital, while others use fixed brass type for a traditional touch.
- Digital Personalisation Methods:
- Cover Printing: Allows for a wide range of fonts, colours, and sizes to be used in the design.
- Engraving: Uses a laser to precisely remove the top layer of the material, revealing its natural hues beneath. Works great with most fonts but some detail may be lost with fine fonts such as Magarella.
- 22ct Gold and Palladium: Uses digital technology to apply genuine 22ct gold or palladium for a luxurious finish.
- Fixed Brass Type Methods:
- Debossing: Uses heated brass type to create an impression in the cover material, resulting in an elegant, tactile finish.
- Foiling: Also known as ‘hot foiling’, this method uses heated brass type to apply metallic or coloured foil to the cover, offering a modern, customised look.
Examples of Fonts
Examples of fonts for different personalisation methods can be found on the Personalisation and Presentation page.

Tips for Best Results
- Keep It Concise: Shorter text tends to look more elegant and balanced, especially on smaller albums. Aim for a concise, meaningful message.
- Avoid Overcrowding: Too many characters can make the text appear cramped. If possible, use fewer words to create a cleaner design.
- Font and Spacing Considerations: Depending on the font you select, the appearance of your text might change, especially with wider letters or symbols. Consider this when choosing your wording.
